DURRANT Architects

The DURRANT Copper Basin YMCA Design Team: Left to Right: Frank Roberts, Principal, Director of Business Development; Evan Sockalosky, Designer; Michael Hudson, Designer; and Scott A. Bohning, AIA, Managing Principal.

Durrant’s Phoenix, Arizona office opened in 1980 when Frank Roberts and Phil Dinsmore partnered and formed Architecture One. In 1990 the partners changed the name to Roberts/Dinsmore Associates and during the 1990’s the firm’s main market sectors were criminal justice, commercial, educational, governmental, health care and industrial. These areas of specialty set the stage for the types of projects now served by the Durrant-Phoenix office. Durrant acquired Roberts/Dinsmore Associates in 1992.

The Copper Basin YMCA project typifies the community planning design approach offered to its clients by Durrant; "...it was to be the anchor for the surrounding Copper Basin residential community." noted Evan Sockalosky who, with Mike Hudson headed the design team on the project. As shown in the "Main Street" rendering in the photo above, the YMCA is located on the Copper Basin main thoroughfare, adjacent to the elementary school. Typical YMCA amenities such as the pool, Fitness Facility, Aerobics Center and DayCare/Childcare facility make it a nature community gathering place for Copper Basin residents.

In their decision to use Berridge metal panels, Evan Sockalosky says "We used the Berridge corrugated S-Deck and Cee-Lock Standing Seam Roof in unfinished natural Galvalume because we wanted to tie back to the agricultural and rural environment of the surrounding area." As the photos below show, the final result is both functional and aesthetic.
